What to expect during an herbal consultation

If you haven’t already read my article entitled, What is Traditional Herbal Medicine, then I highly recommend reading that as well.

Congratulations in prioritizing your health! Here’s what to expect from our time together.

Before our first appointment...
I ask that you fill out my extensive intake form prior to meeting with me. After you fill this out and return it to me, I will spend thoughtful time reviewing the information you’ve submitted, looking for patterns and forming a hypothesis about what you are currently experiencing.

By filling out this information it allows me to ask more focused questions during our time together.

During your appointment...
Appointments can take place either in person at my office in Twisp, or long distance by telephone. Appointment times generally last  60 minutes.

By telephone:
If we meet by telephone, we set up a specific appointment time and you call me. During the phone call I ask you any questions I have and you are free to ask me questions and relate any information that has come up for you since filling out the form.

In person...
If we meet in person in Twisp, we schedule an appointment time at my office. During our time together, besides asking questions, I will also look at your tongue and feel your pulse for diagnostic purposes. To facilitate this process please do not scrape or brush your tongue prior to our meeting. Also it is helpful if you do not wear makeup or strong scented products.

Whether we meet in person or by phone I might also take this time to explain some concepts that are important to your healing process.

Receiving your personalized suggestions...
After we have met I spend more time on my own finalizing my analysis and suggestions. Within 24 hours I will send you a table summarizing my suggestions for you.

This table includes:

  • Herbal, dietary and lifestyle recommendations
  • The dosage for herbs and supplements
  • Duration for these suggestions
  • Reasoning for the suggestions

This often includes hyperlinks for more information or for suggestions on a particular product. I may also send you additional instructions on how to prepare various herbal formulas.

For the most part I do not receive any financial incentive for suggesting a particular product. Instead I choose products specifically because I know they work and can expect certain results from them.

Using Herbs

If you would like to substitute a particular product then please check with me first. Oftentimes substitutions are fine. However, this is not always the case. For example, if you take nettle root instead of nettle leaf or magnesium oxide instead of magnesium citrate then you will most likely not get the desired results and this can set the healing process back.

The quality of herbs taken is extremely important. If you take old or lesser quality herbs and do not get the desired effects it can be difficult to determine if it was because the herb was not correct for you, or if the herb was missing its medicinal juice.

If you buy herbs in bulk from Mountain Rose Herbs, and use the link I provided, I do get a small affiliate percentage for your business. This does not affect the price of your order but it does help to support me. I choose to be an affiliate of Mountain Rose Herbs because I believe they offer the highest quality herbs at the lowest price. I use them for my personal herbal needs and I appreciate you using this link and supporting me.

Stay in touch!

After you receive my suggestions it may take you a week or so to get the recommended products in hand. Please contact me if you have problems finding anything I suggest or have any questions about preparation.

It's important to me that we create a protocol that works for you. Please tell me if you have any concerns about your suggestions as soon as those concerns arise

Feel free to contact me!

Please contact me via email or phone (email preferred) at any time if you

  • Have questions about your suggestions
  • Have any adverse effects when taking the suggested herbs
The most common “side effect” of herbs is nausea. Oftentimes, adjusting the dosage will alleviate this.
  • Have any significant change in status.
This could include pregnancy (stop all herbs if you become pregnant until you talk with me) or a significant change in symptoms.

Follow Up Appointments...
"Even the reaction to the first herbal treatment is also considered an important and often essential diagnostic paramater."
            ~Michael Tierra

Follow up appointments are extremely important. Depending on the person, these are scheduled anywhere from two weeks to a month after the initial consultation.

Our first consultation is the starting ground and it’s often the follow up appointments that lead to the biggest breakthroughs. After you start taking the herbs, things will undoubtedly shift for you. Our follow up appointment is a further personalization of recommendations to lead you towards better health.

During our follow up meeting, we’ll discuss what is working and what isn’t, adjust dosage levels and possibly add a second layer of treatment.

This outline gives you an idea of what to expect when working with me. I look forward to meeting with you and traveling down the path of wellness together.
